DIGITAL MEDIA – Digital Technologies in art

Exhibition DIGITAL MEDIA presents the Works of students of the Intermedia Studio led by doc. Miroslav Nicz, akad mal., and the Digital Media Studio led by MgA Michal Murin, ArtD. Pedagogues are also curators of the exhibition along with PhDr. Katarina Rusnáková, PhD., the head of the Department of Theory and History of Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts /FVU/, Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica.

Exhibition provides a space also for the students of the Department of Fine Arts and Intermedia at the Technical University  in Koąice, who were invited as quests, under  MgA. Michal Murin´s ArtD.
curation they present a projection of short videos and interactive videoinstallations, which were created in the New Media Studio led by the quest professor Anna Tretter.

Each of the three studios located away from the capital are presented to the audience of Bratislava by means of generously conceived exhibition, which due to its scale stands for the title of the biggest art show dealing with new technologies in Slovakia since 1991. The artworks are shown in fourteen sections with major part consisting of media installations using the spectator´s interactivity. The prepared selection consists of four projections of the short videos varying from videoart and videoperformance to experimental film, containing almost 80 students´works. There can be viewed works based on the computer games, as well as the works based on the knowledge of the programming languages pure data and processing. Art project for the web www also presents art computer virus aimed to promote the works of  students from Banská Bystrica, which intervened into 69 states and 60 thousand computers. The attractive spectator´s experience offer also a format derived from computer games - machinima, which is a special kind of animation based on the  game engine of the pc game. As very interesting comes also the conception of so called exhibition in exhibition, which intents to present  students´works in the 3D virtual museum.

Students´works – characteristic by the variety of the art techniques, forms and themes – deal with the diverse  actual problems of the contemporary life. On one hand there are expressed the opinions towards the themes connected with the subjectivity, intimity, corporality, reflections of the gender ´s questions and interpersonal relationships within their microworlds, on the other hand they probe in their discourses into various sociocultural situations, not avoiding the cultural, societal and political critique.
These adepts of art reffer also to the historical and cultural memory and point their attention at the careful exploration of the social sides of the everyday life in the context of globalised world. Another sphere of their interested covers the field of visual culture, mainly the critique and the ironizing of masmedial manipulation, as well as the creative use of film in the means of found footage videos. The base of many contributions is the artistic intervention into the public real or virtual space. The common factor of the majority of the students´works is not only the focused effort of these authors to communicate interesting messages in the inventive visual language, but also their natural struggle to find their place and spaces for self – realization in both art and life.
